Dr. Ernest Darkoh
Founding Partner

Dr. Ernest Darkoh is an internationally recognized expert in HIV/AIDS program management, strategic planning, systems development, and large-scale healthcare program implementation. He is widely acclaimed for his leadership in helping develop and manage Botswana's National Antiretroviral Treatment Program (Masa Program) - a program regarded as the first African full national scale-up of highly active antiretroviral therapy. As a Founding Partner he is involved in the creation and execution of the Company’s strategy, business development, client project delivery and key internal projects. He serves as an advisor to numerous governments across Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean in the development of public and private sector health programs. His expertise and input are frequently sought after by international organisations including the World Bank, WHO, UNICEF, and many multinational Fortune 500 companies.

Dr. Darkoh was named one of 18 “Global Health Heroes” by Time Magazine, and was featured in the highly acclaimed PBS documentary “Rx for Survival.” He has been elected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. He has most recently been appointed to the United States President’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) and is a frequent plenary speaker at international conferences on strategies for implementing large scale health interventions in resource-limited settings.

Previously, Dr. Darkoh served as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company in New York and South Africa.  Dr. Darkoh received his MD from Harvard Medical School, and his MPH from Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his MBA at the Said School of Business at the University of Oxford, England as a Fulbright Scholar. He graduated with a BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. John Sargent
Founding Partner

Dr. John Sargent is one of the Founders of BroadReach Healthcare and has extensive experience in developing, implementing and managing large-scale healthcare programs in the US and the developing world. As a Founding Partner he is involved in the creation and execution of the Company’s strategy, business development, client project delivery and key internal projects. Since the founding of BroadReach, he has been involved in all major aspects of the company’s strategy, business development and work including the conception and design of the company's first HIV/AIDS treatment program in South Africa, establishment operations there, and serving as the company's first Country Director until late 2006. He also established the company's operations and projects in other countries including Kenya, Namibia, China and Zurich. While at BroadReach, Dr. Sargent has worked on and led a variety of healthcare projects including strategic planning, development of public private partnerships, health systems strengthening, management and leadership training programs, and community mobilization and patient education programs for government, multi-lateral funding and assistance agencies, global NGOs and multi-national organizations. He is frequently called upon to speak at conferences and to advise governments, multi-national companies and donors and has been recognized with awards such as Devex’s 40 Under 40 Leaders in international development.

Before founding BroadReach, he served as Senior Director and National Practice Leader at the Advisory Board Company - a Washington DC, USA based healthcare research, consulting firm, and think tank. Prior to this, he served as a management consultant within the New York office of APM/CSC Healthcare, a leading US healthcare consulting firm. Dr. Sargent received his BS in Biology from Dartmouth College, his master’s degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology as a Fulbright Scholar from Oxford University, and his MD from Harvard Medical School.

Bertrand Talbotier
President & Chief Operating Officer

Bertrand Talbotier has a strong background in General Management, Marketing, Strategic Planning and Sales Force Development. He is skilled in working in diverse cultural environments, directing affiliates and commercial operations.  As President & COO, Mr. Talbotier is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the company globally, helping to develop the company’s strategy and executing against this strategy.

Prior to joining BroadReach Healthcare, Mr. Talbotier gained his professional background in the pharmaceutical industry and has tackled roles with increasing responsibilities in Marketing and General Management for large companies such as Aventis, sanofi-aventis and Cephalon.  This included positions on Management Committees of these companies (France for sanofi-aventis and Europe for Cephalon) as well as managing director of various country operations in Asia. His professional career has taken him across the globe where he worked in dozens of nations doing portfolio and organization optimization and restructuring.  And, he has lived and worked extensively in France, Thailand and Hong Kong where he was the youngest Managing Director within Aventis. He speaks several languages with an affinity to work in multicultural environments.

Following these senior roles in large corporations, Bertrand Talbotier helped to develop an innovative national strategic initiative in Mauritius – a public private partnership - to strengthen the local economy and to increase international competitiveness.  In the past two years, he founded his own consulting company - Iridium Conseil - which specialized in consulting for healthcare and food industries.  Additionally, he taught Strategy and Marketing for MBA programs at Institut Léonard de Vinci (Paris, France).

Born in France and raised in Reunion Island, Bertrand Talbotier holds an undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Industry and completed his MBA at HEC Business School.

Dr. Robert Ssengonzi
Vice President and Head of Global Health Division

Dr. Ssengonzi comes to BroadReach with technical and management experience as a health specialist.  He has more than 18 years of experience in financial and program management, training, research, monitoring and evaluation, and the use of both quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques in the analysis of behavioral and public health programs.

Prior to joining BroadReach, he was the Director of the Africa Integrated Health Program (AIHP) under RTI's Center for International Health where he managed a number of USG-funded programs with an annual budget of more than $50 million and a staff of more than 100.  He has led a number of larger public health programs funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the US Department of Defence, in several African and Asian countries.

Dr. Ssengonzi has extensive experience working on the implementation of various HIV/AIDS, contraceptive use and malaria prevention and control interventions.

He obtained his Masters in Sociology and Demography and PhD from Pennsylvania State University.

Wendy Townsend
Country Director South Africa

Wendy Townsend has extensive experience in managing and improving the operations of healthcare organizations. Wendy has experience in both the private and public health sector, managing diverse business lines across a broad range of clientele. Having joined BroadReach in 2006, Wendy has played an integral role in establishing the South African operation, from setting up of support functions and governance structures, to comprehensive programme implementation. As Country Director for South Africa, Wendy assumes ultimate responsibility for driving the strategic direction and implementation of BroadReach’s largest Global Health operation.

Prior to joining BroadReach, Ms. Townsend worked at Pharmaceutical Benefit Management (Pty) Ltd which later became owned by Medscheme Holdings (Pty) Ltd, a managed health care provider. Within the Managed Care Division, reporting directly into the Divisional Director, Wendy undertook full accountability and responsibility for the operations of Chronic Medicine Management, Disease Management Care Programs and Oncology Disease Management. This included departmental responsibility extending from clinical management through to IT system implementation and call centre management. As a product this business unit offered electronic switching, claim processing functionality, clinical and financial risk management to 45 client schemes.

Ms. Townsend holds a B. Pharm (Cum Laude) from the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) in South Africa, more recently named Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Kevin Grant
Vice President of Finance

Mr. Grant is an international finance executive with treasury, accounting, corporate finance and banking experience.  His expertise extends to mergers and acquisitions, corporate accounting and control as well as cross border structured financing.

Prior to joining BroadReach, Mr. Grant worked as the Treasurer for the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) an international public-private partnership in the healthcare sector based in Washington, DC.  He was responsible for providing the corporate finance strategy and was responsible for assets of $4 billion.  During his time with GAVI, Mr. Grant issued innovative solutions including a $1 billion international bond that was awarded Innovation of the Year, by the International Securitization Report.

Before that Mr. Grant was Vice President and Treasurer for Lafarge, one of the world's largest producers of cement and was responsible for financing acquisitions of over $2 billion.  His career spans over 30 years and his numerous global positions have covered work in the United States, Saudi Arabia and France alongside organizations like the World Bank, World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Gates Foundation.

Mr. Grant has a MBA from Columbia University and a BA from the University of California.
